The British Society for the History of Science is seeking to appoint a new Postgraduate Representative to serve on council. It is the role of the PG Representative to provide a voice for the postgraduate community in the decisions taken by the council, and promote and create opportunities for postgraduates working on any area of the history of science, medicine, and technology, making this a fantastic opportunity to help shape the activities of the Society and develop initiatives that enhance the PG experience. Recent examples of such initiatives include kickstarting a podcast series with episodes hosted by PGs, developing a series of academic and non-academic skills workshops aimed specifically at PG audiences, and reducing the cost of first-year membership for students. The PG Rep also plays an active role in planning and delivering the BSHS PG Conference, a longstanding annual event that provides an inclusive and exciting space for PGs working on any aspect of HSMT to come together and share their research.
The PG Rep would be expected to serve for two years, though applicants who can take on the role for one year will also be considered. They should be a postgraduate student working on any area of HSMT who is organised, enthusiastic, and keen to promote and enhance PG experiences. There are four core responsibilities pertaining to this role:
• Attend BSHS Council meetings (3 a year, 2 of which are online)
• Produce a monthly newsletter aimed at postgraduate students
• Manage the team of fantastic BSHS PG Ambassadors who help to spread the word about the Society’s activities
• Overseeing the organisation of the annual BSHS PG Conference
